Garden Stepping Stones

On our stifling hot Independence Day, we stuck to the AC and did a family project inside. With the help from my friend, Dawn, we made personalized stepping stones. Here’s how we did it.

We rounded up the following materials:

  • fish marbles, glass tiles, etc
  • plastic flower pot water trays
  • cooking spray
  • water
  • Quikrete – found at home improvement stores

Mix the Quikrete with water. Add enough to bring it to a brownie batter consistency.

Spray plastic trays with cooking spray for easy release.

Pour the Quikrete mix into the trays, filling about 2/3rd full.

Shake to level out the mixture. Pick up and drop the edges of the trays repeatedly to release any air bubbles. Notice the two smooth ones in the back.

Add a little more to fill the container. Shake and tap to smooth and release air bubbles again.

Then, do as you please. We added fish marbles and did hand prints of the whole family and feet impressions of the children. Make sure to really stick the decorative materials in the concrete. If they aren’t secure, they will fall out once the concrete has dried.

Both children really enjoyed the project.

Sweet J was so determined to participate and, though initially we were afraid he would try to ingest the marbles, he was all about helping. By the end, ‘helping’ meant throwing handfuls of marbles in one tray. I love how it turned out.

The writing didn’t turn out well for some reason. I don’t know if it was my timing or what but it’s fairly illegible. Thankfully I have photo evidence.

Allow them to thoroughly dry. The water will collect in the impressions but evaporates while it dries.

Once they are completely dry, pop the stepping stones from the molds and that’s it.

Baby hands.

I love Bug’s imperfect heart around her hand print. Love love love.

Take care.
