When we were in New York last summer (I was there for Alt Summit), MJ and I happened to witness a celebrity enter a store. It may seem like a routine activity, entering a store, but when you are a star, it entails over-sized SUVs, body guards and being hounded by a hoard of photographers running with their enormous cameras. We were caught off guard by the action but felt like we were getting the real NYC experience.
Curious as we I was, we went in the store. The star had just entered the dressing room and I lost interest. However, I did see the cutest pair of heels. Navy heels, suede body with the cutest little gold stars embossed on them. At $500 something, they were a little out of my price range but you know, I like to make stuff. And this is one of those super simple projects.
-gold paint
-paint brush, paper scorer
-heels
Use the paint to make a design. I chose polka dots because I love ’em but you can do whatever you’d like. My heels are suede and I think it would work on other material surfaces as well, except the really shiny stuff. I used a paper scorer to make the dots; a paint brush handle would be much the same.
For making the pattern, you can wing it like I did or plan it out on paper. If you feel at all anxious about the curves of the shoe, plan it out. There were a few times when I really thought I’d messed it up beyond repair. But then I uncrossed my eyes and got it done.
I haven’t sealed them yet though I am planning on using a protector spray made for shoes. The spray is more for the suede than the paint. Light suede shoes are a magnet for dirt.
I love how they turned out. I love them with jeans and I’m sketching up a skirt that will be perfect with them too. However, until this snow melts, MJ has agreed to be my official transport so the shoes stay pristine (i.e. he will carry me whenever there is hazardous terrain).
The sacrifices we make for fashion.
These look great, Amy! It seems like it would be hard to get the grid of dots straight with so many curves on the shoes. I’m sure if I tried to free-hand it with paint, my dots would be all wonky… but not enough to look like it was supposed to be that way. Ha!
Haha Rachel! I’m sure if you look close, there is definite wonkiness. But I still like them. :)
So cute!!! Shoes from Target, yeah?
Yes to Target! I even got them on clearance. Even better!
these are fabulous!!! It makes me want to wear heals more just to make myself a pair!!! ;)
They are so fun, Jane!
Amy, these are so cute! Well done.
Very cute! What kind of gold paint did you use? (I’ve been looking everywhere for circular gold paint! =)
I love how these turned out! These scream girls night out. I think I might just have to plan one so I have an excuse to pick up a pair and try this out myself!
