Have you all heard of Vecco?
Vecco is the leading edge of home DIYs with their products to customize rugs and carpets through colorants, stencils and sealants. I learned about Vecco through the Alt Summit and got to actually see their wares at one of the mini parties during the conference. I was amazed. I mean they have created products to paint carpets. How cool is that?! So imagine my excitement when I received the opportunity to try out one of their kits. When the box arrived, I was over the moon.
I loved the organization of the box! In a different nerd life of mine, I would be thrilled to design stuff like this. Everything has its own little spot. So cool! The kit I chose was Stay! Don’t Ginko which included ginko leaf stencils and rustic orange and merlot colorants, as well as an 18″ x 30″ rug.
Cute little bottles of paint!
I headed outside to do the project because the kiddos needed run time but I could have stayed in because the low VOC and the use of pigments instead of metallic dyes make Vecco colorants safe to use indoors. Then, before I started, I did a little bit of worrying. Having never painted on carpet and actually having always avoided painting my various carpeted surfaces, I was nervous to begin. Then I remembered. Even if I did make a mistake or if I decided that I didn’t like a certain design, once the colorants have dried for 48 hours, they can be vacuumed up. Completely. Like I said, amazing, right? So I took the plunge.
I decided to add some asymmetrical lines first using painters tape.
After making sure the tape was stuck down well, I used two scrap pieces of MDF to protect the rest of the carpet before spraying the color.
As each line was sprayed, I peeled away the tape and continued around the rug, using the same method with the rustic orange. It would have been easier to allow the paint to dry just a bit so when I pulled the tape up it wouldn’t have had the chance to drip (like it did in the middle, visible in the right side photo) but I couldn’t wait! I was able to cover the dot with a leaf so it wasn’t a big deal.
Then it was time for the ginko leaves. The quality of the stencil was fantastic. Thick stock with a cloth-like texture on the top and a slick, easily wipeable backside. After each spray, I dabbed the excess paint on the stencil before picking it up and then made sure to wipe the back before repositioning it for the next leaf.
I was having such a good time that it was hard to stop but I settled on two big leaves with four little ones about.
After the colorants had thoroughly dried 48 hours later, I decided that yes, I did like the way the rug looked and I sealed the deal with the sealants. I’m currently waiting for it to completely dry but I adore it already. I’m trying to figure out where I can put the rug so the dirt-collecting people who live in my home won’t muck it up. However, I do know I can use a vacuum on it if needed.
I really enjoyed this project. I feel like Vecco is the new frontier in home DIYs. Customizing carpet with quality products that are safe to use indoors and around little ones and are long lasting so the design will stick is amazing. As a person who likes being able to mess with just about everything in their environment, I love this. I’m already planning a large rug for our bedroom. I have my eye on this kit, this one and this stencil too. I love this one for a child’s room. There are so many possibilities! It will be hard to actually have to choose.
So what do you think? Which kit or stencil caught your eye?
Take care.
I received product compensation for this post but the thoughts and opinions are my own.
