Still need a gift for the dad/dads in your life?
I’ve got just the thing.
This idea was inspired by something that has been on my dad’s desk since before I could probably see the top of the desk. In clear glass, the letters D-A-D hold three little pictures of my brother and me when we were very young (so young, in fact, my sister wasn’t even alive yet). Wearing coordinating red and blue outfits, our little faces smile out of the spaces in the capital letters, forever preserved as itty bitty ones. I thought it would be perfect to recreate.
Here’s how I did it:
You will need:
- Letters D-A-D or your preferred paternal term
- Wooden cube – mine is 2″ x 2″
- Wooden craft stick
- Paint and brush
- Glue stick and craft glue
- Photos, either the real thing or color copies, sized to fit

First up, paint the top side of the cube. I chose black because the letters were black but go with your own color.
While the cube dries, stack up the letters. It was a little tricky to get things to look alright and balanced but when I got them in place, I used the wooden craft stick to hold them in place.
After the glue dried, I did paint the sticks to blend in.
Next, adhere the photos to the sides of the cube. I chose to only cover three sides so we could leave a message on the backside.
Sand to soften the edges and cover it all with a clear coat.
Before putting the images inside the ‘Ds’, I backed them with some black cardstock. It gave a little strength to the paper and helped them blend in on the back.
I cut them down and adhered them with a couple dots of the glue stick .
With a generous line of craft glue, stick the D-A-D to the top of the cube. Allow to thoroughly dry.
It’s ready for the office. Or bedside table. Or bookshelf.
Oh wait, remember to sign and date it.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
Especially to my dad and his dad-isms that make me laugh. :)
And to MJ and the crazy home we have.
Take care.
Hi Amy,
Looking forward to the CSI Mod Podge Linky party you are judging. Have a great day.
