On our trip to Door County in August, I came across a neat scarf while shopping. It was a striped jersey knit scarf in turquoise and black and it was all one continuous loop, as opposed to a regular scarf with two ends. It was similar to the one pictured below.
I didn’t purchase the one I found because I look like a sick sailor in turquoise, a lesson I learned the hard way in my fifth grade picture.
But, I liked the concept so much, I thought I would attempt to make one for myself. I didn’t know a thing about working with jersey knit material and I didn’t know what dimensions would be best either. I did a bit of research on other scarf measurements and then came up with a size and length I thought would work best for me.
I was kinda chicken to do this so I only purchased one yard of a jersey knit. I didn’t want to buy more thus spending more and then having it spectacularly fail. An added bonus, the fabric was 40% off, so the yard was only $7.79.
After washing and drying the fabric, the fabric measured 36″ x 48″. I cut it in half, top to bottom, which left me with two 36″ x 24″ rectangles.
I folded the rectangles, hot-dog bun style (long and skinny) with the right sides together and sewed up each edge. These rectangles were 36″ x 12″.
With the fabric still inside out, I connected the rectangles together, right sides together, matching up the seams.
On the second side, I turned my long tube of fabric right side out. (This is hard to explain, so bear with me.) To sew the loop together, I turned the top edges of each side down so I could match up the right sides. I sewed around the loop as far as I could but left a 4-5″ gap to close by hand.
I flipped the material right side out and then sewed up the hole. After everything, the scarf’s final dimension is a 68″ loop that is 12″ wide. Perfect for me.
Viala!! Now some lame pictures of me with my beautiful scarf.
I am not a model. Yes, I felt silly.
Have a great weekend! See you next week.
