Flannel Baby Blocks

For Christmas, I sewed Sweet J three over-sized flannel blocks. The baby flannel section is one of my favorite stops in the fabric store. One day, I just had to have some for a project yet to be decided. These blocks were perfect. I did use the star print for one of the lap desks, too.

These blocks are a cinch to put together. Each one takes six squares and the panels for Sweet J’s blocks measured 6″ x 6″. To help the blocks keep their shape, I ironed on interfacing before sewing.

For the whole block, I used a 1/2 inch inseam. Begin by sewing together the four side panels.

Next, attach the top panel by pulling each side taut and matching all the corners. Then attach.

I know many of you are more proficient at sewing than me but I have always loved this don’t-have-to-stop-just-because-it’s-a-corner technique.

1. When a corner is reached, sew until you’ve reached your inseam depth, which, in this case is 1/2 inch. Stop with the needle down.

2. Again, with the needle down, lift the presser foot

3. and rotate the fabric 90 degrees.

4. Once things were realigned, continue sewing. Repeat at each corner.

All sewed up. Remember to leave a 2-inch opening on one side, top or bottom, so the block can be turned right-side-out.

Turn the block right side out through the small hole.

Stuff and hand-stitch the opening closed.

Sweet J liked them but he liked the ribbon better.

Take care.
