Fleecy Spring Chicks

Easter is almost here and I just had to share these little guys.

Don’t be deceived by their cuteness for they can used as weapons.

At least that’s what Sweet J showed me.

There’s no pattern. I purchased an 1/8 of a yard cut of both light yellow and a golden rod colored fleece for a whopping $.75 each. To create the chicks, I folded the fleece over on itself, varying the amount and cut a rough shape. Keeping the folded edge cut down on a little sewing.

Then sew around the shape, making sure to leave a little opening to turn things around. It was the easiest to have the opening on the side as opposed to the top. As you see, I only used the edges as a guideline and sewed a smaller shape.

I wanted these chicks to sit pretty so before turning them right-side-out, I did what I think is called a box pleat at the bottom.

Things are starting to take shape.

The only thing I had in my house to give the chicks a little weight at the bottom was rice and it worked great. I made a little paper funnel and filled the bottom portion of the chick with rice.

I used regular stuffing to fill the rest of the chick. You could use all rice or all stuffing, whatever works.

Oh, but did you notice the little tufts of ‘hair’ on the chicks at the top?

It was at this point that I thought the bald chick thing wasn’t going to cut it so one by one I removed the stuffing, seam-ripped a small opening at the top and tucked in some fleecy ‘hair’, re-sewed it and stuffed them again. More work but definitely better. To avoid undoing and redoing, tuck the hair in on the first go around with the sewing machine.

The next step was sewing some cute little wings. I just ‘winged’ it with the shape but you can definitely draw it out. It was much easier to sew it first and then cut it out.

Wings!

Then it becomes all about handsewing on the parts. I attached the wings, making sure they could still flap. I used blue embroidery thread for the eyes and sewed on orange felt for the beak.

Pretty dern cute.

And these chicks are all about their stylin’. Haha!

All ready to go for the weekend.

Take care.

  1. So cute. I am hoping the next year or so of my life finally sees me learning to sew. I love the idea of just putting these together because…because it’s Easter.
