Goldfish Valentines

Goldfish Valentine 12.1

Valentine’s Day is this week! We are on our second year of preschool treats and I think putting them together is the most fun. I am a little bit of a fun-killer though – I don’t like giving candy. As a child, candy is exciting! As a mother, not so much. Last year, we did Pirate’s Booty Valentines and this year, we made Valentines with Goldfish crackers.

It took some experimenting but we were able to get them to look a little fish-like with bright tissue paper and fishing line-like string. Their fins are hearts and they are finished off with an applicable tag. This is how we did it.

Here’s what you need:

-individual bags of Goldfish crackers
-tissue paper
-string
-washi tape
-double-sided tape (not pictured)
-x-acto knife (not pictured)
-colored paper
-heart punch

Cut a length of string and tape it down on the bag in the middle. Set aside.

Take one piece of tissue paper and fold it into quarters. Unfold the tissue paper and use the X-acto knife to cut a slit at the intersection of the quarter folds. Thread the string connected to the crackers through the slit.

Once the string is through, wrap the tissue paper around the cracker bag and gather it like below. Tie it with another piece of string.

Use the heart punch to make a pile of hearts. (No punch? Cut them out with scissors.)

With double-sided tape, attach a heart on each side of the fish as fins.

On a small piece of double-sided tape, attach two folded hearts and stick to the top as the head fins. I actually have no idea what the official name is for the fins, I am just making it up. :)

Now it’s time for a tag. I made up a little free printable that you can use if you’d like. It reads: “Valentine, you caught me HOOK, LINE & SINKER.’ There is a spot to sign your name next to the heart. All you have to do is print and cut out.

Punch a hole and thread it on the line.

All done and ready for giving.

Love Bug told me she wants one just for herself. That is the best form of flattery I can get.

Being a mom is so fun.

Are you giving Valentines this year? Handmade? Store-bought? Candy or no?

Take care.

  1. These are really cute. In the past we have given fun things other than candy. This year we went all sugar, and I feel a little guilty about it. I guess I will resolve to do something different again next year!

  2. Oh my goodness Amy these are so sweet! I would love to make these for my students but let’s face it, 25 is too many cause I’m lazy/too busy with other things ;)
I wanted to make them valentines but I think I’ll be baking them cupcakes instead.
