Heart Calzones

I found this recipe on Shine from Yahoo and saved it for Heart Day.

The recipe did come with its own ingredients for pizza dough but I used a family recipe instead.

Dough (Shine dough recipe here)

Combine:

1 cup warm water
1 package yeast

When dissolved, add:

1 Tbsp sugar
1 ½ tsp salt
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 ¼ cup flour

Beat smooth. Add 2 cups flour or enough to make a stiff dough.

Knead dough until elastic, about 5 minutes.

Place in greased bowl and let rise until double, about 45 minutes.

Calzones

Rolling out small portions of the dough at a time, cut out an even number of hearts. I found rolling the dough thin works best because it will plump up in the oven. Also, using a larger size heart cut-out is less tedious. (Although I didn’t have one, a heart shape with a deep ‘V’ shape in the middle would probably make prettier calzones.)

Fill calzones with a thin layer of marinara sauce, assorted toppings and cheese. (Not a whole lot fits however.) Crimp the edges with a fork.

Place on greased baking tray and bake at 400° for 12-15 minutes or until lightly brown. Test to make sure the dough is done baking.

Serve with marinara dipping sauce.

*Next time I make them, I’m going to brush the outside with butter and sprinkle with salt and garlic for added flavor.

Take care.
