Here is a project I did for my sister-in-law (MJ’s sister) for Christmas. We didn’t celebrate Christmas until January so I’m only two+ months behind, not three.
I found this project on the 30 Handmade Days by guest blogger My Blonde Ambitions. The link doesn’t seem to work anymore so I can’t connect you to the other project. JG, my sister-in-law, has a collection of jewelry and wasn’t happy with her arrangement so I thought this would help. (Thanks JG for the finished, in-use shots.)
It is very simple and easy.
Using wooden plaques from any craft store as the base (picked up mine at Michaels), I coated them in white paint first. (The blog by My Blonde Ambition used decorative paper instead of paint as the design element. Either one works. If paper is easier for you, just cut it down to the correct size, glue it down and then seal it.)
I decided to put the holes for the hooks in at this stage so if I messed up, it wouldn’t be noticeable. I used some of my own jewelry to determine the spacing. I also placed hangers on the back so they could be hung on the wall. (My Blonde Ambition used a plate stand to hold the jewelry on top of a bureau. Again, either way works.)
After finishing the drilling, I used some stencils to add some texture
then used various purples to finish my design. I used the darkest purple to paint the edges.
I coated the whole plaque in Mod Podge.
Using a dowel that 1.) fit in the hooks and 2.) was small enough to hang earrings on, I cut enough sticks for the hooks and painted them the same color as the edge. I did learn that it’s better to have the sticks longer than shorter. I was concerned about them sticking out too far but that is better than having them slip off because they are too short.
As for the hooks, I already had a collection of gold ones (needed a couple our first year of marriage and since they come in packs of 100, I still have most of them), so I just sprayed them white.
Done and done.
Then it was up to JG to put them to use.

Love these! You should sell them. What a neat idea and you make them look even better the way you put your own little design on them. Cool!
