Lemonade Slushies

We are experiencing a late-in-the-season heat wave this week. One thing we like to do when it’s really, really hot outside, or anytime during the summer, is make something we call:

My mom made these for my siblings and me during the hotter days of our young summers. They were especially great after a day spent working in the cornfield. Talk about a hot summer job! I spent like 10 summers either pollinating, derouging or detasseling in cornfields around where I grew up. If you ask anyone close to me, they will tell you I disliked just about every single minute of the dirty, hard, hot work. However, it was ‘character-building’, as my mom would say and it was darn good money.

My work in the cornfield is done F.O.R.E.V.E.R. But they still help us beat the heat.

Need a fun, cold drink for dinner?

Use your choice of frozen concentrate. Lemonade, pink lemonade, or, my favorite, limeade. I have not tried other kinds beyond these three but I think they would work just fine.

Pour the frozen concentrate into the blender.

Add in four cans of ice.

Fill the can one more time, this time with water. Chop, blend, puree the ice and drink concentrate. While the blender is running, pour the water in the top. Add in just enough to make it a slushie. The amount depends on how liquidy the concentrate is and how watery the ice cubes are. If not enough water is added, the slush is more of a crushed ice block with some flavor. I usually call it good after adding in half a can of water.

Pour into glasses, add a fun straw (or strawl, as Bug calls it) and drink immediately.

Immediately does not mean quickly though. Drinking too fast can lead to brain freezes.

I’m not much of an actor so while I was trying to just fake the brain freeze, I did indeed give myself one. The things I do for authenticity. Thankfully I recovered.

My favorite part is when the slush melts a little so it’s more very-cold-drink than slush.

Cold deliciousness.

Take care.

PS. I want to get to know you all a little better and what better way to do that than put up a Facebook poll, right? Check for that later today on my page.

  1. Ooooooh, brain freeze is the worst. These pictures of you and your slushie are super cute. I must try that recipe…but is it ok if I add a little something extra to turn it into an adult-only cocktail?!

  2. Hi Amy,
Thank you for sharing your delicious lemonade recipe. It’s been soooo hot lately, and I have been craving for refreshing slushy lemonade. Burger King just came out with Lemonade on their menu but after awhile, it does get quite costly. Your lemonade recipe definitely beats Burger King’s one. And alot cheaper. We can’t finish it all at once, so next time I will put them into ice cube trays. That way it will be individually frozen and place them into freezer ziploc bags, and whenever you want lemonade, just put some into a cup and let it thaw.
