After the crazy haze of moving has passed, I’ve had some time to think and I’ve determined I deserve a housewarming gift. Haha! Finding this home took patience and level-headedness and perseverance and we did it. It took a long time but we did it. We made it. But what is a good housewarming gift for one’s self? Especially when one is footing the bill.
I kept it simple. I decided a few succulent house plants would be my housewarming gift to myself because what doesn’t say “Welcome Home” better than a few house plants to slowly kill? But the cute, yet plain succulents needed a little something extra. That’s when I thought of my friend, Amanda. Amanda is one of the coolest makers I know (and she lives just up the road from me!). She does it all. She puts on amazing crafting events all over the US, has a sweet and beautiful Instagram feed and she fixes up thrift store finds that everyone wants. And if that isn’t enough, she makes darling house pillows that she sells in her shop. So cute, in fact, she worked with JoAnn Fabrics to create a kit so anyone can make their own (and you should!). I haven’t made it to the store yet to get my kit (you heard we just moved, right?) but I thought a mini house made with polymer clay would adorable in my succulent. Turns out, I was right.
It’s super easy and doesn’t take long.
Supplies:
-polymer clay
-cutting blade
-pasta machine or rolling pin
-small bits of decorative paper, optional
-wooden skewer
Condition and roll about the polymer clay. The pink for the house base was rolled out on 9, the largest setting and the others (the black of the roof, the light pink for the windows, the gold door) were done on setting 4.
-Cut out a house shape.
-To make windows, take the rolled clay (on setting 4) and cut out a square and then cut out 4 smaller squares. I placed a small piece of decorative paper between the house base and the window pane for extra dimension and cuteness.
-To make the door, take the rolled clay (on setting 4) and cut out a rectangle. I added a ball of clay door knob too.
-For the roof, I made a polka dot pattern piece by pairing a black clay (on setting 4) with little balls of white clay.
-For the polymer clay pom pom trim, I made a clay “snake” and added small balls of clay to it. I also made a very flat, slightly wrinkled strip to act like lace.
Then I put it all together. The polka dot piece was wrapped about the house base. The strip of faux lace and pom pom trim was added at the roof/house seam. All the window panes and their decorative paper inner panels were added. Really, really cute, no?
Because I wanted to stick it in a plant, I placed a skewer on the backside with a polymer clay piece over it to hold in in place.
I love it.
Happy home
