It’s true. I wear a mom uniform just about every day. Kinda like the signature looks of Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Steve Jobs of Apple but with much less money and tech savviness. It’s not because I’m lazy or because I don’t care about my appearance, although there are some days when both of those descriptions apply. I wear it because as a mom of three children, a stay-at-home, with-the-children-all-day mom who dabbles in the maker stuff, this uniform suits me best for my life at this time. And I’d rather spend my time living and doing than thinking about my clothes.
This uniform I wear consists of a stack of v-neck tees in a variety of colors and stretchy pants, almost exclusively capri length. Comfort is one of the most important aspects of the clothing I buy and wear. I have to be able to crawl on the floor, hold/wrestle children and generally move about as well as stay cool so natural, soft, stretchy fabrics are key.
My uniform works because I’m not concerned about ruining them. It’s not apparel finery in the least. In fact, quite a few pieces have specks of paint on them. It’s apparent I am not as careful as I think I am. Plus, because of the children, any number of substances befall my clothing everyday. I’m not going to list them because some are super gross! My favorite is the foody face prints Sweet J leaves on my pants.
Mom-uniform acceptance aside, I want to start to build a wardrobe that is less mom uniform and more things I wear for me. Still high on comfort and low on complication but less lax yoga instructor. I read an article about a capsule wardrobe and I’m all about it. Whittling down the choices to a concentrated set of things I really like to wear so less time is spent hemming and hawing over what to put on. Things stay interesting because sets are switched out each season.
I’m just starting to work on it. Tossing out clothes I’ve hung onto for far too long for no good reason and trying to figure out exactly what I want to wear. It’s not going to be Amy-sans-children anytime soon but I can live with that.
And in true maker fashion, I hope to make some pieces myself. My want-to-make pattern list is so long but I’m starting slowly. Hope to share that with you as I do.
Do you wear a mom uniform? What do you think of the capsule wardrobe?
Also a SAHM to three. Also rockin’ the mom uniform on a daily basis. If I take a shower, or put on real pants, at least one of them will ask me where I’m going.
Haha! If they only knew the people we were before they were alive. :)
