For no other reason than “because I wanted to”.
Oh and I guess I wanted to eat some too.
The art piece hangs in Love Bug’s room and one day, I just thought it would be fun to replicate it in frosting atop chocolate cake. And it was.
Yes, I know I’m strange.
Cake decorating is something I’ve always enjoyed dabbling in and I love watching any cake decorating show. Wow, can they do some fantastic things! So with my limited skills, I treated this cake like a regular art piece I would paint. First, I laid down the core hues. Then I went about mixing little bits of darker and lighter hues to add depth, like the painting. Granted, the colors aren’t perfect. My food dye selection is a wee bit smaller than my paint selection (I mean, brown was as black as I could get with my stash).
But I am still tickled with the result.
It tasted good too.
Today I’m sharing my favorite buttercream recipe. Works on cakes, cupcakes and can be eaten straight from the bowl.
Buttercream Frosting
from Better Homes & Gardens
1/2 a bag of powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
4 Tbsp (or more, as needed) milk or half & half
Cream the butter. Add in the sugar, vanilla and 3 tablespoons of milk and mix until smooth and blended. Beat in additional milk as needed for easy spreading consistency. Beat until light and fluffy.
**For this two layer cake and “painted” decoration, I made a double recipe and had some left over. I think one and a half recipes would be just about perfect.
And a cake tip for your next baking experience:
To prevent your cake from sticking to the cooling racks, first put down a paper towel and place the cake on it on top of the cooling racks.
Somehow, it allows airflow which prevents the sticky-ness and resulting loose chunks.
I had a hard time believing it too until I tried it. Works like a charm.
The recipe I used for the cake is a cupcake recipe I love. Not too sweet but spongy and delicious. But, while everything worked out, did I break a baking law by making a cupcake recipe into cake? Box cake mixes can be made into cupcakes so I thought they were interchangeable.
Can anyone share any insight on this question?
Take care.

that is awesome!
Superb! Love your brilliant idea and that is so unique. This is perfect for a friend’s birthday party because she loves painting. She will surely love this.
Wow! I really like the way you decorated the cake! It’s something different from the usual frosting! Thank you for the recipe!
Well I use cake recipes to make cupcakes. Never needed to find and adapt cupcake recipes for cupcakes. I guess if it works both way, why not try eh? One problem I have in using cake recipe on cupcakes is they crack kinda from the top when fully baked :-/
