Play Dough Cookies

I came across this fun recipe on The Idea Room. I loved the color element and Love Bug, of course, loved the cookie element.

It is an engaging project to do with little ones but maybe when they are a little older.

Play Dough Cookies

¾ cup butter, softened
3 ounces cream cheese
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 ¾ cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
Assorted paste food colors
24 lollipop sticks

In a bowl, cream butter, cream cheese and sugar until fluffy.

Add egg and vanilla. Beat until smooth.

Combine flour, baking powder and salt in another bowl. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.

Divide dough into fourth. Tint each with a different food color. Wrap each in plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours.

To make the cookies, preheat oven to 350°.

This is what the directions say for the next step. “Working with half of each color, shape dough into 3/4 inch balls.”

I thought it was easier to do this. I formed half of each color ball into a basic rectangle. Then I divided each into 12 equal parts and shaped those into balls (they will be ¾ inch balls). Less guess work. In the end, you will end up with 24 total cookies, 12 cookies from each “half”. (Hope that makes sense.)

For each cookie, take one ball of each color and roll into a larger ball.

I did my own experiments with the dough. I tried different combos. I rolled the pink and purple together and the yellow and blue together and made that a cookie. I made snakes with each color and then wound them individually. Whatever works!

Roll that ball into a 12 inch ‘snake’. Starting at one end, coil the ‘snake’ around itself, making a round cookie.

Place cookies on a greased cookie sheet, 3 inches apart.

Insert a lollipop stick into each cookie.

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Cool and store in an airtight container.

This “mad face” was her idea. Maybe she decided on this face after I told her we wouldn’t be eating any of the cookies until after lunch.
