To finish off the week (don’t worry, there is still one more Spring Fling day next week!), a DIY springy art idea.
One of the most common responses I get when people learn about my creative energy is ‘oh, I couldn’t do that, I’m not artistic at all’. Now granted, everyone has their own gift, their own sweet spot. But I believe everyone can make things with their hands. Everyone can create. Whether it’s springy dot art, paint-by-numbers, microsculpting or sharks in formaldehyde.
This one is really easy and it will bring spring anywhere you want to put it.
You need:
- Canvas – mine is 11×14
- Paint – I used gray (with white mixed in) for the background and brown for the branches
- Paper dots in various sizes and colors – I used 1 inch, 3/4 inch and 1/2 inch
- Green paper for leaves
- Glue stick and sealer
Begin by giving the canvas a coat of light, light gray. I used full-strength gray on the edges. Allow it to dry.
The branches are simple brush strokes. I did a couple ‘background’ branches by adding a little white with the brown. The ‘front’ branches were just full strength brown.
Start adding dots. The little ones were first. Then the medium size and lastly, the big ones.
When things are in the right spot, stick them with glue.
Using the green paper, cut a few curved and tapering strips of green. Place them just right.
I added a couple of strips at the bottom along the bottom too.
Cover the whole thing with your preferred sealer.
I went one step beyond and added a bit of gloss to a few of the dots with this product.
Easy peasy. Really. It’s even kid-friendly. A must-do for this sure-to-be-springy weekend.
Have a great one.
Take care.

I love it! It looks easy to do and what a way to add some spring to your home! What kind of sealer do you use? (any suggestions) and a gloss? I love your blog, by the way!
thanks so much! as a sealant, i use both modge podge and golden’s gel, both in the gloss and matte. good luck on your creations!
