A Bright, Colorful & Fringe-Filled Geometric Heart DIY

Tis the season for giant, bright, colorful and fringe-filled hearts. Extra points if it’s geometric. And fringe. That just puts it over the top. I am just giddy about this heart. As I was brainstorming projects, I wanted to make something big and bright and colorful that I could hang on our front door. The front of the house is very neutral and, I’ll say it, bland. We have some small tweaks planned when the weather warms but, since paint doesn’t stick when it’s freezing cold, I have to rely on a temporary fix or two. This heart is visible from down the street. #winning

We made the heart from chipboard, a really inexpensive and easy-to-work-with medium. It’s really great for constructing things because it can be manipulated from a 2D form to 3D with shallow cuts which allow the board to bend but stay together. It’s a simple form but we jazzed it up with fringe.

Supplies:

-crepe paper
-chip board
-right-angled triangle (ours was 6″ x 6″ x 8.5″)
-ruler
-masking tape
-cutting blade
-hot glue
-cording, to hang – optional

Create a right-angled triangle. Cut out 20 from the chipboard.  Lay them out like the image below, tracing around each.

Use a ruler to make a 2″ border around the edge of the heart. Cut it out as so.

To create the folded edge, it requires a half cut, a cut that doesn’t go all the way through the chipboard. Use a straight edge and cutting blade to make half cuts around the border of the geometric heart.

Fold the edges back on the half cuts. Use tape to hold the seams together. Add hot glue on the backside of the seams to make them stronger.

Cut the crepe paper into 2″ strips then fringe with scissors.

Cover the front the triangles with crepe paper fringe using hot glue. We made sure all our fringe hung the same direction but it’s not required.

Arrange the triangles on the heart form. Glue in place.

This step is optional. Add a loop to hang the heart by cutting a hole in the peaks, threading a cord through and tie knots.

Hold (or hang) and love.

Tell me: do you hang festive things on your front door? Just wreathes or are you more daring? :)
