I gave a preview of this project last week and here is the real thing.
This was the problem.
I’ll start from the beginning.
With some gift cards we received as wedding gifts, MJ and I purchased four of these cube storage items from Target. We felt so grown up. In it’s first life, these cubes were all connected for a four-some entry way console. I think they served a similar purpose in the second apartment too.
When we moved into this house, the four-some was split into two two-somes to serve as nightstands for MJ and I. At first, the top cubes were switched; MJ had the open shelves and I had the the cube with a cupboard door. But I quickly swapped them when I noticed I could sit in the living room, look down the hall and see all MJ’s nightstand junk sitting on the shelves. On my side, it wasn’t so noticeable.
But it was still a problem. It was hard to organize efficiently and it was hard to keep neat.
I thought about getting baskets but I didn’t find anything I really liked and the ones I did like wouldn’t fit.
Then I remembered – I know how to make boxes.
So I measured the space and began.
I had to haul out Gert, my monstrous Kuttrimmer, a.k.a, giant paper cutter, and cut the book board to size. I will introduce Gert soon. She is a swell gal.
Glued the edges,
and formed the boxes.
Wrapped them in book cloth.
Then, to cover the exposed bottom of the box, I wrapped board in flocked paper and glued them into place in the bottom of the box.
Next step, the front of the boxes.
After rolling out lots of polymer clay, adding texture and shape to the clay, baking it and then using some colored inks, this is the result.
The top one is a spiral/curvy relief design with a beaded handle done in brown and copper tones.
And the bottom one is a collection of the floret shape I love so much, all done in browns and reds with a hint of copper.
I think they really class up my side of the bed, obviously edging out MJ’s half for the “Best Side of the Bed” title.
Also, they hide all my junk. Beautifully, I might add.
