The beautiful, light wood floors in our home are another eye-catching feature we liked immediately. In our first home, MJ and I tore up carpet and heinous linoleum and laid laminate flooring. It was a challenging project and we learned a lot and we loved the outcome. It was one of those game-changer renovations and we’ve been wood-floor loving people since. However, for all the love I can spout about wood floors – easier to clean, easier to keep clean, pleasing to my bare feet – , there are a few points of nuisance that I, a parent of three young children, noted quickly. They aren’t soft to sit and play on (or fall on, says Pipsqueak). Running, jumping, skipping, hopping, leaping…. all very loud on bare wood floors. So. Much. Thumping. Additionally, noise – yelling, screeching, singing, wailing – ricochets and reverberates intensely off of hard surfaces like bare floors. Having the opportunity to work with Rugs USA., I started searching for rugs within the first week. I knew I needed to get something on the floor and fast.
Choosing a rug is another one of those things I brood about anxiously and obsessively. I am sensitive to pattern and texture and color and I worry about wearability, clean-ability and, in the end, if it will go with the room and I will like it a good long time. I think I looked through the options on Rugs USA like six or seven times. Not just some of them but all of the options in the colors I envisioned. By the end, MJ told me to get over it already and choose something already. Thankfully by then, I had found what I wanted.
We settled on a darkish, nondescript textured rug that wasn’t a fiber (my feet don’t like jute!) for the front door. It’s proven to be great with dirty shoes and bare feet. I think I can flip it over too! Lighter for the warmer seasons, darker for the cooler ones.
The space between the kitchen and the family room is kind of this open, free space. We have no plans to put furniture pieces in it but it did need a rug for playing on and noise reduction. Because I’m envisioning a deeper color for the walls in the family room, I didn’t want to further darken it with a dark rug so it’s on the lighter side. But, knowing it would be at risk for falling food, I needed a really low pile so nothing would get buried in it. This chroma trellis rug fit the bill.
The front room was the hardest choice for me. The walls are going to stay a light color so I wanted to take a risk and purchase a rug with color. Oh, how I agonized! Until I found it and I’ll be the first to say, it doesn’t look like anything I’ve chosen before!! Never one to gravitate to blues and teals, I find myself drawn to those tones for this house. The gold scrolls catch the warmth of the floor and make the space warmer. I’m thrilled about this one the most.
I’m happy to report it’s slightly less noisy in our home. At least the ricochetting and loud thumping has diminished. My sanity has been saved! And playing on the floor couldn’t be better. The painting isn’t done, the decor isn’t set but having the rugs makes our space feel just a little more complete.
Are you thinking about covering your floors? What kind of rugs do you like?
